Digging a ditch can sometimes be a stately act, notably
when it is a statement of duty and freedom, yet every
soldier's hitch forebodes to bear that load upon his back
for liberty in all seasons.
So, in this trench, lying among the stench of battle, I am
fouled in the shadow of the enemy's grapple. Only honor
can be my battle song, so clang the bell and clamor for
